The Original and Longest Running Comic Book, Toy and Collectible Convention in Daytona Beach, Florida

Daytona Beach Comic Con Featured Guest Creator

Joe Rivera spent decades working as a pastel portrait and caricature artist: portraits suggest a likeness with light and color, caricatures convey personality and action with a simple black line. This skill set, plus years of airbrushing on t-shirts and motorcycles, translated nicely into inking for the comic book industry.

His first inked work was Daredevil; his son, Paolo, the penciler. The younger Rivera’s Spider-Man, ValiantHellboy and Planet of the Apes also made their way to Joe’s drawing board. When Joe Quinones, RISD grad and Marvel penciler, requested Rivera Sr.’s help with Howard the Duck and America, Joe said “sure”.  A nomination for “best inker” yielded Eisner and Harvey awards in 2012.

Rivera sticks to old school inking (versus digital inking), which has the advantage of creating a collectible piece of artwork. If interested in originals, Mark Hay, of in Dallas, is Rivera’s art rep and handles all art sales.
